Apricot Pugs and the Color Variations of the Breed

The apricot coloring of a Pug is caused by a recessive gene. Since the final color from the gene can vary in shade, you may get a color that is closer to fawn. If you want the apricot coloring of your pug to be dark, you should buy your pet from a breeder that breeds parents with a strong apricot color.

Appearance

Apricot Pugs should have a light yellow-golden coat. The same coat may have various shades of light yellow-golden color. Fawn Pugs have a lighter color that is nearly cream. The shade may also vary in the same coat.

Some breeders sell what they call apricot-fawn Pugs. The coat color of these pugs is somewhere between fawn and apricot. Pugs with this color have a thin strip of hair down their spine. This line is black in color and called the “trace.” They should also have a black face mask.

Aside from the coat color, the physical appearance of apricot Pugs is not different from pugs of other colors. Apricot Pugs have the same build, flat face and smooth coat as other pugs. They have black ears and a black mask.

Apricot Pug Color Variations

Purebred Pugs are only available in 2 colors – black and fawn. Pugs of other colors are not pedigree and are cross breeds. The Canadian Kennel Club also recognizes the apricot and silver colors. Other colors are considered to be non-purebred.

The most common Pug color is fawn, followed by black. A few Pug owners report their Pug to be brindle, a striping of dark and light colors that are deliberately bred into the canine. Brindle is the rarest Pug color.

There are also white Pugs, but this color is not normal for this breed. This color may appear due to albinism, crossbreeding and genetic mutations. White is a sought-after color, but it brings the risk of deafness. Dogs with such colors are simply lacking in pigment.

When they don’t have pigment around or in their ears, they might suffer from deafness. It is best to avoid Pugs that are completely white. Some breeders use unhealthy breeding methods to make as many white Pugs as possible.

Temperament

The color of a Pug doesn’t affect its temperament. However, there are various factors that influence the overall temperament of this breed like their current situation, upbringing and training. Some owners say that apricot Pugs are timid, while others say that they are raucous. However, there’s no scientific evidence to prove these claims.

If a breeder makes these claims, you should be wary of buying from them. They might be misinformed or simply lying about the temperament of the puppies to boost their sales. Apricot Pugs can be mischievous and charming just like any other pug, as long as they are trained and raised properly.

This breed may suffer from separation anxiety, so you have to keep them company in order for them to feel safe.

Apricot Pugs Health

You don’t need to worry about coat-related health problems when you have an apricot Pug. This is because they have a smooth coat that can be easily managed. However, you should still keep in mind that Pugs are not an extremely healthy breed.

They can develop brachycephalic airway syndrome due to their flat face and their facial structure causes difficulties in breathing and squeezes their nasal cavities.

Apart from this condition, their facial structure can also cause exercise and heat intolerance, birthing issues, severe back problems, skin infection and irritation and eye problems like corneal ulcers. Pugs may develop joint problems like hip dysplasia and patellar luxation.

All these issues may appear regardless of the Pug’s color. You have to consider these facts before getting a Pug. Make sure that you have the resources and time required to properly care for your dog.

Exercise

Pugs may not tolerate strenuous exercise and heat, so don’t take them out when it is hot outside. Light exercise is enough for them. You should also keep them inside an air-conditioned room when it’s really hot.

Apricot Pugs Grooming

Pugs shed a lot, especially during summer. Bathing and brushing will keep their coat in great shape. It will also prevent them from shedding like crazy. You can bathe your dog once a month. Some owners give their Pugs a bath more often.

Since they are small, you can bathe them in a utility sink or in your kitchen. Their nails should be trimmed on a regular basis. Don’t forget to clean their facial wrinkles. Keep their wrinkles dry to prevent infections. You can use baby wipes or dry cotton balls to clean the folds.

Their ears should be cleaned every few weeks. You should also prevent gum disease by brushing their teeth regularly using a toothbrush and toothpaste made for dogs. Grooming should be a positive experience for your Pug. Praise him and give him rewards.

Don’t forget to check for rashes, tenderness and other signs of infections on his feet and skin as well as in his nose, eyes and mouth.

How to Find an Apricot Pug

Find reputable breeders who are recognized by trustworthy breeding societies. It’s a good sign if they have a lot of positive feedback from their customers. Be wary of breeders who claim that there are differences between apricot Pugs and other color variations as they are just using false advertising.

You may also want to consider the common health issues associated with this breed. If you don’t want to deal with expensive trips to the vet, you should find a healthier breed.
