How to Care for Springerdoodle Puppies

Puppy-proof Your Home

So, you’ve decided to get a springerdoodle puppy. Before you think about buying an expensive dog bed or a luxurious collar, you have to puppy-proof your home first. If you got your puppy from a reliable breeder, then expect it to be friendly, sociable, and confident.

Just like any other breed, Springerdoodle puppies will feel vulnerable when they are separated from their littermates and parents. Puppies need at least a week to settle in, so you should be around during this period.

Remove any item that might injure or electrocute your pup such as electric cables and wires, needles, screw drivers and any other sharp objects. You should also get rid of any toxic plants, especially if you’re going to let them play in your garden. Provide them with a quiet and safe area where they can sleep undisturbed.

Vigorous playtime should be done outside. If you’re going to play with them inside the house, keep it calm. The pup will learn that being rowdy inside the house is a big no-no. You may want to limit their play area by installing high quality puppy gates. This way, you can keep them safe even when you are not watching over them.

Ceramic water and feed bowls are better than metal or plastic ones. A dog crate will make it easier to transport your pup. Consider investing in a playpen that is roomy enough for the puppies. You may also want to buy your pup some chew toys.

Puppies will start teething at 3 months of age. They should have toys of their own, so they will know the difference between your belongings and their toys. You can put baby blankets in the crate to keep your puppy comfortable. Since puppies are easily stressed by loud sounds, you should keep the noises down.

Springerdoodle Puppies Exercise and Grooming

They should exercise every day to help them burn off excess energy and prevent bad habits such as digging and chewing. Playtime and a 1 to 2-mile walk will do. Springerdoodle puppies don’t need a lot of maintenance. You only need to brush their coats regularly with a soft bristle brush. Check their ears for dirt or excess earwax.

You also need to brush their teeth every daywith a toothbrush and toothpaste made for dogs. You should also cut their nails with nail clippers suitable for them. You can give them a bath occasionally and you should use conditioner and shampoo formulated for puppies.

Deworming

The breeder should be able to give you information about the puppy’s deworming schedule and the products used. Puppies must be dewormed when they are 6 months-old. The same process should be done when they turn 8, 10 and 12-months old.

Vaccination

The breeder should have given the puppy its first vaccinations. Follow the vaccination schedule provided by the breeder. Puppies should be vaccinated at 10 to 12 weeks old. Discuss boosters with the vet first.

How to House Train Springerdoodle Puppies

Although house training a puppy requiresdedication and time, the results are definitely worth it. You will have an obedient and well-disciplined pup that will take away your stress after a tiring day of work. First of all, you need to establish a good routine. Positive reinforcement will make your task easier. You need to have a lot of patience as well.

Puppies raised with their parents are easier to train than pups raised in a dog crate. This is because the former relieve themselves outside because of their parents’ example, while pups raised in dog crates use the crate as their restroom.

To establish a good routine, take the pup outside every day. The time and spot should be the same each day. How old is your pup? Add 1 hour to their age and that’s the time you need to take them outside. For instance, you should take a 3-month old puppy outside every 4 hours.

It’s important to establish routines early to make it easier to break bad habits. Reward good behavior by giving the pup a treat or by praising him. Punish bad behavior only if you catch them in the act. By doing so, the pup will understand what behavior will get him a reward orwhat actions will gain punishment.

If you think physical aggression and yelling will give you positive results, you’re wrong. Your pup will only fear you and interpret your response as a threat. Be firm when reprimanding your puppy. Say “no” firmly when he displays unwanted behavior. In this way, you’re establishing your authority over the pup.
