Are you a new pet parent or is it your first time having a dog? You might be looking at toy breeds like the Yorkshire terrier and the Pomeranian as options. Both are lovable and irresistible and if you cannot decide which of these breeds you’d like to own, better have a Terrier Pomeranian. Learn all about this crossbreed in today’s post.

History

The Yorkshire Terrier Pomeranian cross, sometimes called the Yoranian or the Yorkie-Pom is a relatively new breed although its origins are unclear. In case you are wondering where each breed came from, the Yorkies originally came from the UK and were used for hunting in the fields while the Pomeranians are descendants of the wolf-like dogs in Germany.

Appearance

This crossbreed often has the built of a Pomeranian, which is around 7 to 12 inches in height and only 3-7 pounds in weight. However, many Yoranians sport the same coat as a Yorkie, which is known for its silky and long coat. The Pomeranian has more of fur while the Yorkie has more hair all over its body.

The Pomeranian has a wide range of color but the Yorkie can only have four. If it is not a combination of black and gold or blue and gold, it could have a black and tan or blue and tan coat colors.

Personality

This mix may be small but it’s among the most independent dogs you can find. It enjoys being the alpha dog and will not likely appreciate belonging in a pack.

Many families with young children choose either the Pomeranian or the Yorkie because these dogs rarely exhibit aggression.

If you are looking for a dog that is easy to train, the Yoranian can be a bit of a challenge. It does not always follow commands and while it can be effective at hunting or watching, it is not the best choice if you are particularly looking for a herding or guarding dog.

Grooming

Since many Terrier Pomeranian crosses have the coat of their Yorkie parent, it’s best to follow the grooming suggestions for this purebred dog. Yorkies usually have high coat maintenance and many pet parents of this breed often seek the help of a professional groomer just to get the job done.

At home, you can give your buddy a gentle brush using a slicker brush. It can be trimmed but if you are quite hesitant to do it yourself, simply bring your pet to the nearest groomer to ensure safety.

The only great thing about this mix is it does not shed a lot and it does not produce a lot of dander. This crossbreed only has a low to medium shedding level, making it acceptable for people with mild allergies to pets.

Feeding

Your dog has a tiny tummy so he does not a lot of feeding throughout the day. For dogs this size, vets usually recommend giving 150-200 calories a day. This will depend on the activity of your pet. If your buddy is such a highly active one, you may offer up to 200 calories and you are also free to reduce it if your pet is not the active type.

Always look for a small kibble size to make it easy for your pet to eat. Remember that they have a small mouth and jaw so the regular sized kibble may not be appropriate for them. As always, go for high-quality ingredients when looking for dry dog food for your pet. Your dog needs high amounts of protein. It will also benefit from other nutritious ingredients like sweet potatoes and berries.

Health

This crossbreed has a long life and could live from 12 to 16 years on average. Many dogs from this breed could even live longer. However, they are still predisposed to a handful of conditions, like the following:

  • Patellar Luxation – it is a condition wherein the dog’s kneecap is not in its normal anatomic position. In some dogs, it is inherited but it can also be caused by a traumatic injury. This can be treated by supportive nutrients and exercise, especially if the condition is still on the onset. If it is a severe type, the dog needs to undergo surgery to avoid further discomfort.
  • Collapsed Trachea – both the Yorkie and the Pomeranian are prone to this condition, which is due to the weak cartilage in their windpipe. It is characterized by a cough that sounds so dry and in clusters. The signs are actually almost the same as for a canine infectious respiratory disease so you need to bring your pet to the vet for proper diagnosis. It is confirmed through endoscopy or X-rays.
  • Hypoglycemia – it is often seen in Yorkies and other small pets. The lack of sugar in the body calls for an emergency situation because this could result in seizures, pain, and even death. Dogs with this condition are usually prescribed a high-calorie supplement immediately.

Exercise Needs

Although a product of two toy breeds, don’t expect your buddy to just lie around and observe people. Your pet could have a medium to high energy level so better be prepared with lots of mind and body stimulation to avoid boredom.

However, this breed is still manageable even for new pet parents. It is not that strong and only has a running speed of 11-12 miles per hour. It is definitely one of the best options if you are looking for a pet that can thrive in an apartment.

Conclusion

The Yoranian is perfect for families and even those with young children. It is overall friendly, fairly healthy, and can be easily transported. You can bring it anywhere you want, which is a good thing for your dog because this mix just loves attention and would love being snuggled.
